Professor Guerra holds a degree in Agriculture from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1977). He also earned a master’s degree in Plant Science from the same university in 1980 and a doctoral degree in Botany (Plant Physiology) from the Universidade de São Paulo in 1990. He completed a postdoctoral research in Cellular Biology-Plant Biotechnology at the University of California – Davis in 1991-92. At present, he holds the position of a full professor at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, where he serves as a professor in the Graduate Program in Plant Genetic Resources and the Graduate Program in Agricultural and Natural Ecosystems. He is also a visiting professor in the Graduate Program in Plant Genetic Resources at the Universidade Agostinho Neto, in Angola. His work primarily revolves around the broad field of Plant Genetic Resources, focusing on aspects related to their characterization, conservation, improvement, and sustainable use. He utilizes biotechnological approaches grounded in cellular and molecular biology, with a particular emphasis on plant species native to various Brazilian biomes. Moreover, Professor Guerra has a history of service and leadership within the scientific community. He served as an advisor to the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) and represented the scientific community as a full member of the National Biodiversity Commission (CONABIO) of the Ministry of the Environment, on behalf of the SBPC. Additionally, he served as an advisory committee member, School Director, National Director, and Binational Director at the Brazilian-Argentine Center for Biotechnology (CBAB-CABBIO), which is affiliated with the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCT) and the Argentine Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MINCyT).
