Teaching Internship

The teaching internship is a mandatory component of the academic training of CAPES doctoral scholarship holders (minimum of two semesters) and optional for all other graduate students. According to Resolution No. 03/CPG/2021, the following teaching internship courses are available:

  • Teaching Internship I (1 credit = 15 hours): intended for undergraduate courses with a minimum workload of 2 credits (36 class hours). Students may teach 3 to 5 class hours, while the remaining hours are devoted to lesson preparation and assistance with student assessment.
  • Teaching Internship II (2 credits = 30 hours): intended for undergraduate courses with a minimum workload of 3 credits (54 class hours). Students may teach 8 to 10 class hours, with the remaining time allocated to lesson preparation and support for assessment activities.
  • Teaching Internship III (3 credits = 45 hours): intended for undergraduate courses with a minimum workload of 4 credits (72 class hours). Students may teach 12 to 15 class hours, while the remaining hours are dedicated to lesson preparation and assistance with student evaluation.

Students wishing to enroll in one of the teaching internship courses must submit a Teaching Internship Activity Proposal to the PPGEAN Delegated Academic Committee when requesting enrollment.

Relevant legislation

The regulations governing the teaching internship are established by the Social Demand Program (DS) Regulations, annexed to CAPES Ordinance No. 76 of April 14, 2010, which defines the program’s objectives and the criteria for awarding scholarships.

Article 18. The teaching internship is an integral part of graduate education, aimed at preparing graduate students for teaching and enhancing the quality of undergraduate education. It is mandatory for all scholarship holders under the Social Demand Program and is subject to the following provisions:

I – In graduate programs offering both master’s and doctoral degrees, the teaching internship is mandatory only for doctoral students.

II – In graduate programs offering only a master’s degree, the teaching internship requirement applies to master’s students.

III – Institutions that do not offer undergraduate programs must establish partnerships with other higher education institutions to meet the teaching internship requirements.

IV – The teaching internship may be remunerated at the discretion of the institution, provided that CAPES funds are not used for this purpose.

V – The minimum duration of the teaching internship is one semester for master’s students and two semesters for doctoral students. The maximum duration is two semesters for master’s students and three semesters for doctoral students.

VI – The CAPES/DS Scholarship Committee is responsible for registering and evaluating the teaching internship for graduate credit purposes, as well as defining its supervision and monitoring procedures.

VII – Higher education faculty members who can demonstrate previous teaching experience are exempt from the teaching internship requirement.

VIII – Teaching internship activities must be compatible with the graduate student’s research area within the graduate program.

IX – Where a formal agreement exists between educational systems, and all other requirements of this Article are met, the teaching internship may be carried out in public secondary schools.

X – The maximum teaching workload for the internship is 4 hours per week.
